first, afghanistan, this spring we will see a new state of our engagement in afghanistan with the announcement of the first provinces where afghan security forces are ready to take the lead. in 2010, we got the strategy and the resources right. now we have to build on those and get transition to afghan security right. last year we made changes on the ground and now we need to ensure those changes are durable. our training mission has made significant progress. there are now over 256,000 trained soldiers and police. the biggest growth in the history of afghan security forces. and this is not just about quantity, but also quality. we have tripled the number of army leadership schools', and we have launched an intensive literacy campaign and it's just the start of a long and vicious process. we can already see the results. recently afghan soldiers made up over 60% of the forces involved in our toughest operations in kandahar. most critically, this means continuing our work on training and educating the afghan security forces. this is a key priority. more than ever, this is our ticket to a success

it is the spirit that i have seen in our men and women in uniform, those serving in afghanistan in iraq today for a cause greater than themselves, protecting and advancing freedom. and it is most powerfully the spirit i have seen in the wounded heroes i visit at walter reed who, amazingly, want nothing more than to go back to the battlefield, to rejoin their brothers and sisters in arms. it is the spirit that every day inspires all of our american heroes, our first responders and educators, our entrepreneurs and innovators, our citizen activists and religious leaders. it is the spirit that inspires hundreds of millions of seemingly ordinary americans, the unsung heroes who work hard and play by the rules every day, driven by a dream, inspired to imagine a tomorrow that is better than today for themselves, most importantly for their children, for our country, and our world. that is the spirit that has defined the american people for two hundred 35 years now and that i know will continue to make as the greatest nation in the world. and that is, my friends, the spirit that fills me today.
